January 20 – Pluto and the Sun Move into Aquarius
When an outer planet (Pluto, Neptune, Uranus) changes signs, everything changes – how we perceive, relate to, and experience ourselves, each other, the Earth, and reality itself. The movement into the next sign initiates a shift in the collective spirit and in personal consciousness. Both the shadow side and the new possibilities of the sign get our attention.
Pluto’s move into Aquarius is an invitation to move out of the insanity of doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results. Cosmic downloads and expanded awareness make a fundamental shift possible. Aided by the Aquarian ability to think ‘out of the box,’ we can open our minds to doing things differently and experiment with getting different results.
With an expanded Aquarian perspective, our strategies and goals for how we live our lives, what is most important to us, and our commitments may radically change. Stay tuned. Aquarius is the sign of unexpected surprises, magic, and miracles.
We Live in Revolutionary Times
Pluto takes 248 years to make its way through the zodiac. The last time Pluto was in Aquarius was from 1778-1798. During that time, the North American colonies and the Great Britain fought the War of Independence from 1775 to 1783.
The Bearer of Consciousness
The symbol for Aquarius is the Waterbearer – a man or woman holding a jug with what looks like water flowing out of it. Actually the flow is not water; it is consciousness. The Aquarius archetype represents the stage of our human development when our mind awakens to the universal mind. We become a channel for divine intelligence to download into our human vessel. It is through this ability of the human mind to receive cosmic guidance that inventors and scientists receive their inspiration, and we are guided to bring forth something new.
Aquarius is associated with quantum leaps and breakthroughs in scientific and technological advances. It also symbolizes radical transformation in social norms and how we relate to our humanity. Grassroots movements, honoring diversity, egalitarian structures, and collaboration are higher Aquarian themes that want to be expressed. We each strive to thrive in our uniqueness.
But utopian Aquarian dreams can easily devolve into dystopia. We need to be able to take personal responsibility with awakened consciousness to cease being hypnotized into yet another form of blind conformity. If we continue to allow ourselves to be controlled by our unhealthy addictive habits, we will be subjects of control. If we continue to worship and be mesmerized by charismatic figures or external power, we can fall prey to even more serious versions of ideological indoctrination and technological dehumanization. No matter how we frame and idealize our views, all individuals, social movements, and technology are subject to abuse of power.
Ideological and dogmatic beliefs that purport to be ‘free speech’ can be another version of control and hypocrisy trying to eliminate dissent, manipulate perception, and impose biases in the name of the truth. Our idealized version of the Aquarian Age has a chance only when enough global citizens operate from awakened heart-centered consciousness.
Shift from Capricorn to Aquarius
Pluto’s shift from Capricorn to Aquarius inaugurates the next phase of human evolution.
Capricorn is the last earth sign of the zodiac. Aquarius is the last air sign of zodiac.
The shift from earth to air creates a fundamental shift from materialism to spiritual awakening.
It is not that we will no longer be concerned with physical reality, but that we will wake up to the spiritual essence of our human experience and the sacredness of Mother Earth. With expanded awareness, we can open our hearts to ourselves and each other and commit to taking care of, instead of exploiting and destroying our beautiful and extraordinary planet. We can realize our interconnectedness, our oneness, and our divine essence. From awakened consciousness, we can move beyond polarization, domination, control, and exploitation. We can reinvent our political and economic structures to support equity, justice, caring, and sustainability.
Capricorn
Earth sign Capricorn focuses our attention on
- our relationship with authority,
- how we define and take responsibility,
- how we set our priorities,
- the need to respect the limits and boundaries of physical reality, and
- the right use of power.
Capricorn symbolizes our move into adulthood, when ideally
- we develop a sense of maturity and become sovereign, responsible human beings.
- We find our sense of inner authority and follow it.
- We find approval and validation within ourselves.
- We graduate out of needy and co-dependent relationships.
- We define our own identity and self-worth and no longer succumb to ridiculous social fads or tempting illusions.
Spiritual Application
Both Capricorn and Saturn (traditional ruler of both Capricorn and Aquarius) have practical application to our spiritual journey, especially now since Saturn is in Pisces (March 7, 2023 through February 13, 2026). We are led to examine how we relate to authority figures, rules, and discipline.
Do our spiritual practices help us connect to our own essence? Do they prepare us for to a direct personal experience of oneness with all, and the ability to trust a higher power? Does our spiritual path lead us to self-love, kindness to all, and humility?
Learning the spiritual lessons of Capricorn – (1) personal accountability, (2) internalized authority, (3) being realistic and grounded in the physical world – are prerequisites for achieving the Aquarian goals of awakening to and operating from our hearts in our global community.
Intense and Extraordinary Times
These are intense and crazy times, with many challenges. What is happening in the world does not make sense by any sane, rational, or compassionate standards. There is overwhelming intentional, mean, absurd, and unnecessary human suffering. Unfortunately it looks like we will continue to witness many very disturbing and disastrous situations worldwide.
It is easy to get overtaken by depression, despair and self-doubt. It is understandable that many feel helpless and hopeless.
To survive and thrive, it is critical that we learn how to benefit from the higher frequency energies, and not get sucked into the negativity. The higher frequency energies can be debilitating for those who cannot adapt and align with them
No one is immune from challenges. However, the higher frequencies make it possible to ride the wave to higher consciousness and to find the miracles of Joy and Love in our own hearts! And to manifest from focus and attraction, instead of from fear and struggle.
We are the privileged few and should seriously take advantage of this opportunity to benefit and help create a grounded bubble of love that can help elevate the whole world. This is our job.
As hard as it may be, we are always at choice. Here is a quote from Viktor Frankl who survived Nazi camp by choosing not to hate, but to love, his captors.

In our response lies our growth and our freedom… Everything can be taken from a man but one thing, the last of human freedoms, to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s way.”

We seriously need to practice Kundalini Yoga at this time. To change our attitude, we have to change our energetic vibration. Kundalini Yoga is designed to transform our energy and to align with higher frequencies so we are able to do so.
